Glock 34: the complete guide before you buy

The Glock 34 is a long-barrelled Glock 17: 135 mm of barrel, 191 mm of sight radius, 743 g with an empty magazine and a break listed at 2,447 g. That barrel bars it from IPSC Production and from TAR event 830, but not from Standard, Optics or ISSF 25 m.

Pros
Glock 34: 135 mm barrel, 191 mm sight radius
The Glock 34 takes the frame and capacity of the Glock 17, with a longer slide and barrel. Glock's sheets put figures on the difference12:

The extra 22 mm of sight radius makes a misalignment between front and rear sight more visible: that is the point of a long pistol in precision shooting. Height, 139 mm with the magazine inserted, and width, 34 mm, stay those of the Glock 17.

The listed weight of 743 g is with an empty magazine inserted; without a magazine, the Glock 34 weighs 665 g, and 980 g with 17 rounds1.
That is the weight of a service pistol, not of a steel range pistol. A CZ Shadow 2 weighs 1,330 g with an empty magazine5, 587 g more. That extra mass slows muzzle rise between shots; without it, the Glock 34 is easier to transport and less tiring over a long session.

The Glock 34 breaks lighter than the Glock 17: 24 N against 26. On the CZ Shadow 2, only the first shot breaks at 4,691 g; the following ones break at 1,530 g. Sources1245.

Glock lists 24 newtons for the Glock 34 Gen5, about 2,447 g, against 26 newtons for the Glock 17 and 19 of the same generation12. The break is the same on every shot: no double-action first shot to learn.
It remains heavier than a range single action: CZ lists 15 newtons, about 1,530 g, for a Shadow 2 with the hammer cocked5. The rulebooks leave room: 2,447 g is above the 1,000 g minimum at ISSF 25 m11, and IPSC sets no minimum outside Production and Production Optics7.

Glock 34 in IPSC: Standard, Optics and Open
IPSC shooting, called TSV in France, follows the IPSC rulebook9. In the January 2026 edition, the Glock 34's barrel decides its divisions78:

The IPSC Production list, updated on 9 March 2026, approves the Glock 17, 19 and their longer-barrelled variants "provided the barrel length does not exceed 127mm"8. The Glock 34 is not on it.
In Standard, the Glock 34's manufacturer dimensions, 222 × 139 × 34 mm, fit in the gauge box17. The 9mm scores Minor there, Major requiring a caliber of at least 10 mm, or .357 SIG7. The divisions are covered in detail in our article on IPSC in France.
Glock 34 in TAR and at 25 m: two opposite rulebooks
The French federation's TAR 2025-2026 rulebook — service-pistol shooting — excludes from event 830 « tous les pistolets dont la longueur du canon excède 13 cm » [all pistols whose barrel exceeds 13 cm], with this example: « GLOCK 34 et 35 »10. A Glock 17, with a 114 mm barrel, gets in.
In ISSF 25 m centerfire pistol, on the other hand, the Glock 34 meets the specification table111:
- Weight: 743 g with an empty magazine, for 1,400 g at most.
- Barrel: 135 mm, for 153 mm at most.
- Sight radius: 191 mm, for 220 mm at most.
- Trigger: 2,447 g, for 1,000 g at least.
Fibre-optic sights are forbidden there, and no more than five rounds go into the magazine11. The other events are reviewed in our article on pistol eligibility by discipline.
Glock 34 optics: the factory MOS slide
The MOS version is machined at the factory to take a red dot1: a cover plate comes off, and a plate matched to the optic's footprint takes its place. No gunsmith work is needed.
A red dot changes the division: it closes Standard and opens Optics, where it must be fixed on the upper rear of the slide7. Footprints and plates are covered in our red dot guide.
Glock 34 maintenance: little oil, often
Glock's instructions set the pace: the pistol is cleaned when new before first firing, after each session, depending on exposure to rain or dust, and at least once a year12. Lubrication comes down to four points:
- The outside of the barrel, where it rubs inside the slide.
- The inside of the slide, on the same surfaces.
- One drop at the connector, where it meets the trigger bar.
- One drop per slide rail.
The firing-pin channel never takes oil, and the magazine is wiped dry, inside and out12. The full routine is in our pistol maintenance guide.
Glock 34, Glock 17, Walther PDP: what sets them apart
- Against a Glock 17: same frame, same capacity. The 17 costs €120 less in MOS version13 and is allowed in Production as well as in TAR; the 34 brings 22 mm of sight radius and a break listed 204 g lighter12.
- Against a 5-inch Walther PDP Full Size: same weight, 745 g, and the same striker-fired family. Its 127 mm barrel keeps it allowed in Production48.
- Against a CZ Shadow 2: two strategies. The CZ adds 587 g of steel and a 1,530 g single action, at the cost of a 4,691 g first shot5.
- Against a Glock 19: 73 g and 38 mm of sight radius less for the compact13.
Glock 34 in .22 LR: no such version, but the Glock 44
Glock does not make the Glock 34 in .22 LR. The .22 LR version in the range is the Glock 44, in the Glock 19 format: 102 mm barrel, 415 g with an empty magazine, 10 rounds and the same 26 N break14. It sells new for €539 to €5401513.
.22 LR conversion kits, a slide and barrel fitted to an existing frame, exist from Advantage Arms for the Glock 17 and 19, with no model announced for the 3416. Under French law, a .22 LR pistol is still a category B firearm21. The trade-off between the two calibers is set out in our comparison 9mm or .22 LR.

The first year comes to about €1,660 to €1,870, before license and club fees; in the following years, ammunition remains the main item, €624 a year at €0.26 a round17. A Glock 44 in .22 LR brings that item down to €312 a year by the case of 500, for a €540 pistol.
Depending on use, spare magazines and an optic plate come on top.
In France, the Glock 34 is a Category B firearm, like every centerfire pistol: a sport shooter needs a prefectural authorization to buy one, and must store it in a gun safe, a strong cabinet or a strongroom202122. Buying a Glock 34: who it suits, and who less
What it brings, by objective
For IPSC, in Standard, Optics or Open, the Glock 34 brings a long sight radius, an optic-ready slide and a light weight. In return, it closes Production and Production Optics: a Glock 17 or a 5-inch Walther PDP remain allowed there.
For TAR, it does not fit: event 830 excludes it by name. A Glock 17, with a 114 mm barrel, stays under the 13 cm limit.
For 25 m centerfire, it meets the weight, barrel, sight and trigger rules. In return, its 2,447 g break stays heavier than that of a precision pistol.

Three misconceptions about the Glock 34
- "It is the Glock for Production division." Its 135 mm barrel exceeds the 127 mm allowed, and the IPSC Production list does not name it78.
- "Its trigger breaks at 2,270 g." Glock lists 24 N for the Glock 34 Gen5, about 2,447 g1.
- "It weighs 743 g unloaded." 743 g is the weight with an empty magazine inserted; without a magazine, Glock lists 665 g1.

Generation and rulebook change the answer. The Glock 34 Gen4 and Gen5, MOS or not, share neither the same grip nor the same slide, and spec sheets are easily mixed up. Eligibility depends on the edition of the rules in force on match day: when in doubt, the club's range officer decides before the gunsmith does.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Glock 34 allowed in Production division?
No. The 2026 IPSC rules cap the barrel at 127 mm in Production and Production Optics, and the approved handgun list does not name the Glock 34, whose barrel measures 135 mm. It remains allowed in Standard without an optic, in Optics with a red dot, and in Open. A Glock 17, with a 114 mm barrel, is on the Production list.
What is the trigger pull of a Glock 34?
Glock lists 24 newtons for the Glock 34 Gen5, about 2,447 grams. That is less than the 26 newtons, about 2,651 grams, listed for a Glock 17 or a Glock 19 of the same generation. The break is identical from the first shot to the last, as on any striker-fired pistol.
Can a Glock 34 be used in TAR, French service-pistol shooting?
No. The French federation's TAR 2025-2026 rules exclude from event 830 any pistol with a barrel longer than 13 cm, and name the Glock 34 and 35 explicitly. A Glock 17, with a 114 mm barrel, stays under that limit.
Is there a Glock 34 in .22 LR?
No. The .22 LR version in the range is the Glock 44, in the Glock 19 format: 415 grams with an empty magazine, 10 rounds, a 26-newton break, sold new for around 540 euros. At 200 rounds a month, its ammunition costs 312 euros a year by the case, against 624 euros in 9mm.
Do you need an authorization to buy a Glock 34 in France?
Yes. Like every centerfire pistol, the Glock 34 is a category B firearm under French law: a sport shooter can only buy one with an authorization from the prefect, applied for online after three supervised shooting sessions. Four to seven months usually pass between the license and the purchase, and the pistol must then be stored in a gun safe, a strong cabinet or a strongroom.
