The competition pistol trigger: a complete guide

The trigger is the part that separates intention from the shot, and the one most often described badly. Here is what it is actually made of — take-up, wall, overtravel, reset — what adjusts, and why lightening it carelessly causes misfires.

The four parameters of a trigger
Talking about a trigger's "weight" describes a quarter of the subject. One review sets out the others, and its vocabulary is worth adopting.

On an adjustable competition pistol these adjust independently, and the maker documents it. CZ lists 3 to 4 millimeters of single-action travel and the same for reset on a Shadow 2, against 12 millimeters in double action1; its manual locates each screw — trigger pull in the ejector, overtravel and slack set at the factory — and adds that it "recommends that setting of the screws be entrusted to a professional workshop"2. One review describes settings reached through simple screws without special tools, and records take-up and reset in the same three-to-four-millimeter band13.
Reset, what actually governs speed
This is the parameter reviewers name first when asked to explain a pistol's speed — before pull weight.
A short, positive reset lets you run shots without fully releasing the trigger. One review also explains what makes it crisp: reducing internal friction in the mechanism13. Less parasitic resistance, and the return is felt clearly under the finger. Where a maker publishes the figure it is small: CZ gives 3 to 4 millimeters on a Shadow 21, and Walther documents 2.5 millimeters of trigger pull and reset on a Q5 Match SF7.
It is also what explains the reputation of single-action-only guns — 2011s in particular, whose short reset comes up constantly in reviews.

Two kinds of value sit in this ranking, and confusing them distorts every comparison.
Single breaks — single-action-only and striker-fired pistols — run from 1,134 grams on a Staccato XC4 to 2,651 on a Glock 199. Those are comparable with each other.
First shots in double action play in another register: 2,251 grams measured on a Beretta 92X Performance3, 4,690 listed by CZ for a Shadow 21. On those pistols every following shot breaks far lighter — the characteristic step of a hammer-fired action, covered in our comparison of eleven competition 9mm pistols.
Six values here are gauge measurements rather than manufacturer claims, and the table names each one. We flag them rather than blending them in, for two reasons. The first is that between what a spec sheet states and what an instrument reads, the gap sometimes runs to several hundred grams. The second is that several makers publish nothing at all: Walther lists no pull weight for the PDP6, Dan Wesson none for the DWX10, Smith & Wesson none for the Competitor11 — on those pistols a measurement is the only figure that exists.
And one maker publishes two. CZ's product sheet gives 15 newtons in single action; CZ's own instruction manual states that "in the manufacturing factory, trigger pull is set to 10 N" and that "the manufacturer does not recommend setting the trigger pull at a value lower than 10 N"12. Both are CZ figures, five newtons apart.
Lightening a trigger: the risk to understand
This is where one review supplies the technical explanation missing almost everywhere else, and it deserves understanding before any work is done.
On a striker-fired pistol, lightening the trigger often means a weaker striker spring13. The consequence is direct: the striker is launched with less force, so percussion on the primer is less firm. Glock treats the symptom as a reason to stop: a light or off-center firing-pin indent on a cartridge that failed to fire sends the pistol to a competent gunsmith8, and CZ says the same in its own troubleshooting table2.
The risk is a light primer strike — the primer takes an insufficient hit and the cartridge does not fire. It shows up most on hard-primer ammunition, which is precisely what people buy for volume practice.
Some builds compensate: one review describes an extended firing pin intended to restore a firmer hit. But the practical rules stay the same:
- This is gunsmith work, not a kitchen-table job.
- Validate it live, on the ammunition you actually shoot, across several dozen rounds.
- Do not do it before shooting the factory gun for several sessions.

Hammer or striker: two different triggers
The mechanism governs the trigger you can hope for, and that choice precedes every adjustment.
On a hammer-fired pistol, a spring accelerates the hammer, which strikes the firing pin. That is what allows a very light single action, since the first shot's safety comes from the double-action pull. A decocker, where fitted, lowers the hammer mechanically without touching the trigger.
On a striker-fired pistol, the striker is partly or wholly cocked by the slide and released by the trigger. The break is identical every shot, but structurally heavier — as seen on the Glock 34 and the Walther PDP.

Aftermarket parts, and what they deliver
When a factory trigger no longer satisfies, the market is broad. Reviews describe competition assemblies comprising a lightened hammer, a refined trigger, a match disconnector and a titanium hammer strut — the general idea being to reduce moving mass and friction.
Two reservations recur among reviewers, and they converge:
- Do not stack parts from different sources that were never designed to work together. It is the surest way to create problems you will then struggle to diagnose.
- Work one modification at a time, confirming the pistol still runs before moving on.
For an improving shooter the honest trade-off is the one we apply to the rest of the kit: the gap between a decent factory trigger and a worked one matters less than volume of practice.
What the rulebook says
One point to check before committing to anything: some divisions set a minimum trigger pull weight, verified on a gauge by the match official. The two main rulebooks answer this question very differently, and both are public.
USPSA sets no minimum anywhere. Rule 5.1.4 states that "unless required by a Division […] there is no restriction on the trigger pull weight of a firearm, however, the trigger mechanism must, at all times, function safely" — and in the March 2026 edition every one of the nine division appendices answers "Minimum trigger pull: No"14.
IPSC does, in Production and Production Optics. The requirement is 2,270 g on the first shot with no restriction after it, or 1,360 g on every shot15. Appendix E4a sets out how it is checked: the weight or scale is attached "as closely as possible to the center of the trigger face", the trigger must either raise and hold the weight with the muzzle pointed vertically skywards or register not less than the figure on a scale, and the test is run at most three times — if the hammer or striker falls on all three attempts, the handgun has failed15.
A pistol whose break falls below the threshold becomes non-compliant, however good the work. Thresholds change between rulebook editions, and each page of both documents names the edition it belongs to; the final verification rests with your match director.
Triggers in four points
- Four parameters, not one: take-up, wall, overtravel and reset. Weight alone describes nothing.
- Reset governs speed, more than the grams do.
- Lightening weakens percussion on striker-fired pistols: light primer strikes follow.
- The rulebook wins: IPSC Production sets a gauge-verified minimum, USPSA sets none.

Any trigger work belongs at a gunsmith — CZ says so itself about its own adjustment screws. Lightening a break alters the balance between safety, ignition reliability and rule compliance — three things a part sold on its own does not guarantee. An over-lightened break causes light primer strikes, particularly on hard-primer ammunition. Some divisions set a minimum pull weight verified on a gauge, so a modified pistol can become non-compliant. Have both the work and the resulting weight validated before entering a match.
Frequently asked questions
What are take-up and overtravel on a pistol trigger?
They are the two travels either side of the break. Take-up is the distance the trigger moves before reaching the wall — the point of firm resistance. Overtravel is what the trigger continues to move after the shot breaks. On an adjustable competition trigger both are reduced by screws, which shortens the finger's total movement.
What is trigger reset?
The distance your finger must let the trigger return before the pistol can fire again. It is the parameter most tied to speed in strings: the shorter and more positive it is, the faster your pairs. One review records take-up and reset of roughly 3 to 4 millimeters on an adjustable competition trigger, and explains that reducing internal friction makes that reset crisper.
Can you lighten your pistol's trigger?
Yes, but not without consequence, and it is gunsmith work. One review describes the mechanism precisely: on a striker-fired pistol, reducing striker spring weight launches the striker with less force, so percussion on the primer is weaker. What trigger pull weight suits competition?

There is no ideal figure: a light pull favors speed and demands disciplined handling, a heavier one is more forgiving. What matters most is your division rulebook, since some set a minimum weight verified on a gauge.
Is the factory trigger good enough to start with?
In almost every case, yes. The break lightens on its own with break-in, and the gap between a decent factory trigger and a worked one matters far less, for an improving shooter, than volume of practice. Shoot several sessions before deciding: what you take for a fault in the pistol is often a matter of habit.
