A 2011 pistol is a 1911 with a double-stack magazine

A 2011 keeps the single-action-only trigger of a 1911: the hammer must be cocked to fire, and the pistol is handled hammer cocked, manual safety on. The difference lies in the grip, which takes a double-stack magazine: 17 rounds on a Staccato P1, against 9 on a 1911 in 9mm.

On the Staccato P, the frame is 4140 steel and the grip is a separate, slimmer polymer module: 33 mm wide at the grip for 38 mm overall1 17. The three families of action are compared in our guide to double action, single action or striker-fired.

Staccato makes only 9mm pistols, in two frame families1:

Steel: P, HD P4, HD P4.5, XC and XL, from 907 to 1,077 g. The XC has a compensator integral to the barrel; the XL, a 5.4-inch barrel.
Aluminum: C, C2 and CS, from 652 to 737 g, with 3.5- to 4-inch barrels.

The Staccato P, at 936 g, weighs 193 g more than a Glock 34 and 394 g less than a CZ Shadow 2 12 13. The HD models take 18-round Glock-pattern steel magazines1.

Staccato lists 2.5 pounds, or 1,134 g, for the XC and XL, and 4 to 4.5 pounds, or 1,814 to 2,041 g, for the P and the C-family models1 4. A review of the P measured 4 pounds 2 ounces, or 1,871 g3, and a review of the XC found the listed 2.5 pounds2.

The break is the same on every shot. A CZ Shadow 2 breaks at 1,530 g in single action, but after a first double-action shot at 4,691 g13; a Dan Wesson DWX, also single action only, is listed at 1,474 g14. The parameters of a trigger break are detailed in our trigger guide.

Staccato in IPSC: barred from Production, allowed in Open

French practical shooting, the TSV, follows the IPSC rulebook7. The 2026 edition expressly prohibits single-action-only pistols in Production and Production Optics, and reserves Classic for single-stack 1911s5. The Production list names no Staccato at all6.

In Standard, the pistol with an empty magazine inserted must fit in a 225 × 150 × 45 mm box5: the Staccato P measures 206 × 150 mm, right at the height limit, and the XL, 231 mm long, does not fit1. The 9mm runs there as Minor5. The divisions are detailed in our article on IPSC and TSV in France.

Staccato in TAR: out of event 830 as shipped

Event 830 of TAR, French service-pistol shooting, accepts pistols with a barrel of 13 cm at most, fixed open sights and a break of at least 1,360 g; it excludes fibre optics, protruding magwells and compensation systems8.

2011 magazines: €86 to €144, no Staccato in France

The Staccato P, XC and XL ship with two 17-round magazines1. On 24 September 2026, no Staccato-branded magazine was on sale in mainland France; 2011 magazines from other makers sell from €86 for an 18-round Mec-Gar to €144 for a 20-round 140 mm magazine20.

In France, three rules frame this item:

Buying requires showing the firearm's authorization, with ten magazines at most per firearm9.
In Optics, a double-stack magazine may not exceed 141.25 mm; in Open, 170 mm5.
Beyond 20 rounds, a handgun magazine moves to Category A, except with a federation practical-shooting certificate9 10.

Other 2011s appear in French gunsmiths' catalogs, including the Kimber 2K11, the BUL SAS II TAC and the SIG Sauer P211 GTO16. The gap between a Tisas and a Staccato P, about €3,000, represents nearly five years of ammunition at 200 rounds a month21.

Staccato, CZ Shadow 2, Dan Wesson DWX: the gaps

Against a CZ Shadow 2: 394 g more for the CZ, a first double-action shot, but access to Production13 15.
Against a Dan Wesson DWX: same single action only, same closed divisions; the DWX keeps a CZ 75 grip and weighs 1,276 g14.
Against a 1911: same trigger, 17 rounds instead of 9, but Classic closed5.

Practicing in .22 LR: no 2011, but 1911-22 pistols

Staccato makes no .22 LR pistol1. To practice the trigger and safety of a single-action-only pistol, .22 LR replicas of the 1911, such as the Mauser 1911-22, sell new for €415 to €47022 23. Their grip takes a single-stack magazine, and the ammunition budget falls to €312 a year bought by the case21. The choice between the two calibers is covered in our comparison of 9mm and .22 LR.

Leaving out the license and club fees, the first year comes to about €5,340 to €5,700 with a Staccato P, €2,280 to €2,560 with a Tisas 2011 Duty, without extra magazines. In the following years, ammunition remains the main item: €624 a year at €0.26 a round21.

The license, the club and the Category B authorization are costed in our first-year budget. In France, a 2011 is a Category B firearm, like every pistol: buying one requires a prefectural authorization, and storing it a gun safe, a strong cabinet or a strongroom11 26.

Buying a Staccato: who it suits, and who less

What it brings, by objective

For Standard or Optics, the Staccato P brings 17 rounds and a single-action-only break on every shot. In return, it costs €4,600 to €4,790 and runs without Production.

For Open, the XC brings a compensator and a 1,134 g break. In return, it costs €7,990 to €8,450 and serves only in that division.

To try the 2011 for less, a Tisas 2011 Duty or a Springfield Prodigy opens the same divisions. In return, the magazines cost as much as a Staccato's.

For Production or TAR, a 2011 does not fit: a CZ Shadow 2 or a polymer pistol is allowed there. Our criteria for choosing a first pistol take the question event by event.

Three misconceptions about 2011 pistols

"A 2011 has an aluminum frame." Staccato lists a 4140 steel frame for the P, and steel for the XC, XL and HD; only the C, C2 and CS are aluminum1.
"A 2011 enters Classic, like a 1911." Classic requires a single-stack magazine5.
"A light break is enough for Production." The IPSC rules bar every single-action-only pistol there, whatever its break5.

The version changes the spec sheet. Steel or aluminum frame, compensated barrel or not, fibre-optic sight or not: each 2011 model changes weight and division. Any work on the trigger of a single-action-only pistol is gunsmith work. When in doubt about eligibility, the club's range officer settles it before the gunsmith does.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 1911 and a 2011?

The magazine. A 2011 keeps the single-action-only trigger and the manual safety of a 1911, but its grip takes a double-stack magazine: 17 rounds on a Staccato P, against 9 on a 1911 in 9mm. That grip, on the other hand, shuts it out of IPSC Classic division, reserved for single-stack 1911s.

How much does a Staccato weigh?

From 652 to 1,077 grams depending on the model. Staccato lists 936 grams for the P, whose frame is 4140 steel, 1,065 grams for the compensated XC and 1,077 for the XL. The C, C2 and CS, with aluminum frames, go down from 737 to 652 grams. A CZ Shadow 2 weighs 1,330 grams.

Is a Staccato allowed in Production division?

No. The 2026 IPSC rules expressly prohibit single-action-only pistols in Production and Production Optics, and Classic division requires a single-stack magazine. A Staccato runs in Standard, without an optic and inside the gauge box, in Optics with a red dot, or in Open; the compensated XC is only allowed in Open.

Where can you buy Staccato magazines in France?

No Staccato-branded magazine was on sale in mainland France on 24 September 2026. 2011 magazines from other makers sell for €86 to €144, for example €86 for an 18-round Mec-Gar and €144 for a 20-round 140 mm magazine. The Staccato HD models take Glock-pattern steel magazines instead.

Do you need an authorization to buy a Staccato in France?

Yes. Like every pistol, a Staccato is a category B firearm under French law: a sport shooter can only buy one with an authorization from the prefect, applied for online after three supervised shooting sessions. Four to seven months usually pass between the license and the purchase, and the pistol must then be stored in a gun safe, a strong cabinet or a strongroom.
