A 1911 pistol: single action only, two safeties
The 1911 fires in single action only: the hammer must be cocked to fire, and the break is the same on every shot. Two safeties come on top3:
- The thumb safety, engaged with the pistol loaded, pushed down at the moment of firing.
- The grip safety, at the back of the grip, which the pressure of the hand disengages.
Springfield Armory's manual describes this order: chamber a round and engage the thumb safety, grip the pistol firmly to disengage the grip safety, then push the thumb safety down3. The three families of action are compared in our guide to double action, single action or striker-fired.
The trigger pull varies by maker: the retailer of the Tisas Zig M lists 2,500 g16. TAR requires at least 1,360 g9, ISSF 25 m 1,000 g10; IPSC Classic sets no minimum6. The details of a trigger break are in our trigger guide.

The single-stack magazine fits in a slim grip, but limits capacity: 7 rounds on a Springfield Mil-Spec in .45 ACP, 8 on a Tisas in .45, 9 in 9mm1216. A 2011 keeps the 1911's trigger but takes a double-stack magazine: 17 rounds on a Staccato P14.
In stages with reloads, IPSC Classic partly levels the field: it caps every magazine at 8 rounds in Major and 10 in Minor at the start signal6.

Forged steel frame and slide, 5-inch barrel: Springfield Armory lists 39 ounces, or 1,106 g, for the Mil-Spec in .45 ACP, and 41 ounces, or 1,162 g, for the Ronin in 9mm12. The Tisas Zig M 1911 A1 is given at 1,010 g19.
A 1911 therefore weighs 74 to 226 g more than a Staccato P, and 168 to 320 g less than a CZ Shadow 21314.
1911 pistol in IPSC: Classic division, 8 or 10 rounds
French practical shooting, the TSV, follows the IPSC rulebook8. The 2026 edition prohibits single-action-only pistols in Production and Production Optics, and gives the 1911 a division of its own6; the Production list includes no 19117:

Classic requires a one-piece metal frame, a single-stack magazine and a 1911 profile; it prohibits slide lightening cuts and limits the magwell to 35 mm wide6. In Standard as in Classic, Major is reserved for calibers of 10 mm and above: the .45 ACP qualifies, the 9mm does not6. The divisions are detailed in our article on IPSC and TSV in France.
1911 pistol in TAR and 25 m: fixed sights, 13 cm barrel
In TAR, French service-pistol shooting, event 830 "recent pistols" accepts pistols with a barrel of 13 cm at most, fixed open sights, a caliber from 7.62 to 11.60 mm and a break of at least 1,360 g9. It excludes fibre optics, protruding magwells and lightening cuts9. A 1911 with a 5-inch barrel and fixed sights, such as the Tisas Zig M or the Springfield Mil-Spec, qualifies119.
Event 832 "authentic pistols" accepts Colt 1911s and 1911 A1s that were in military service, in their original condition and caliber; recent versions are not allowed9.
In ISSF 25 m centerfire pistol, only the 9mm gets in: caliber is capped at 9.65 mm, weight at 1,400 g, and fibre-optic sights are prohibited10. The other disciplines are covered in our article on pistol eligibility by discipline.
1911 maintenance: very little oil
Springfield Armory's manual calls for light oiling after cleaning: "Only a very small amount of oil is needed to adequately lubricate moving parts and prevent rust"3. Excess oil attracts dust, which hampers function. Only stainless 1911s need slightly more lubricant than parkerized or blued models3.
Three steps after each session, according to the same manual3:
- Check that the pistol is unloaded, magazine out and chamber empty.
- Clean the barrel with solvent and a brush, then a dry patch.
- Wipe every surface with a lightly oiled cloth.

1911 pistol in .22 LR: replicas and conversion kits
Two routes exist to practice in .22 LR with the controls of a 1911:
- A .22 LR replica, such as the Mauser 1911-22, at €415 to €470 new2425.
- A conversion kit that replaces the upper half of an existing 1911; Advantage Arms offers them for frames "made to U.S. government mil-specs"5.
In .22 LR, ammunition comes to €312 a year bought by the case, at 200 rounds a month21. The caliber runs neither in IPSC, where the minimum is 9 mm6, nor in TAR pistol9. The choice between the two calibers is covered in our comparison of 9mm and .22 LR.
1911, 2011, Dan Wesson DWX: the gaps
- Against a 2011: same trigger, 17 rounds instead of 9, but Classic closed and a price starting at around €1,53961416.
- Against a Dan Wesson DWX: a 1911 trigger in a CZ 75 grip, 19 rounds, but neither Classic nor Production15.

Leaving out the license and club fees, the first year comes to about €1,560 to €1,810 with a Tisas in 9mm, €2,270 to €2,530 with the same Tisas in .45 ACP. In the following years, ammunition remains the main item: €624 a year in 9mm at €0.26 a round, €1,339 in .45 ACP at about €0.56 a round2122.
The license, the club and the Category B authorization are costed in our first-year budget. In France, a 1911 is a Category B firearm, like every pistol, .22 LR included: buying one requires a prefectural authorization, and storing it a gun safe, a strong cabinet or a strongroom1112.

What it brings, by objective
For IPSC Classic, a 1911 in .45 ACP brings Major power factor and 8 rounds per magazine. In return, its ammunition costs €1,339 a year at 200 rounds a month.
For TAR and 25 m, a 1911 in 9mm with fixed sights enters both events. In return, it runs as Minor in IPSC.
For IPSC Production, the 1911 does not fit: single action only is prohibited there. A CZ Shadow 2 or a polymer pistol is allowed.

Three misconceptions about the 1911 pistol
- "A 1911 should be drowned in oil." Springfield Armory's manual calls for very little oil and warns that excess attracts dust3.
- "The 1911 is banned from IPSC." It is excluded from Production, but Classic is reserved for it, and it runs in Standard, Optics and Open6.
- "The 1911 is a .45 ACP pistol." Springfield, Tisas and Colt all offer it in 9mm, which opens ISSF 25 m241016.

The platform covers very different builds. The same name covers entry-level replicas and match pistols, in 9mm, .38 Super or .45 ACP, with or without fibre optics: eligibility for TAR and Classic is judged on the exact pistol. When in doubt, the club's range officer settles it before the gunsmith does.
Frequently asked questions
A 1911 in 9mm or in .45 ACP?
The two calibers open different events. In .45 ACP, the 1911 runs as Major in Classic and Standard, but falls outside ISSF 25 m centerfire pistol, capped at 9.65 mm, and its ammunition costs about €0.56 a round, or €1,339 a year at 200 rounds a month. In 9mm, it takes one more round, runs as Minor, enters ISSF 25 m, and its ammunition comes to €624 a year.
Is a 1911 allowed in Production division?
No. The 2026 IPSC rules expressly prohibit single-action-only pistols in Production and Production Optics. The 1911 does, however, have its own division, Classic, reserved for 1911-profile pistols with a single-stack magazine: 8 rounds at most at the start in Major, 10 in Minor. It also runs in Standard, in Optics with a red dot and in Open.

Is there a 1911 in .22 LR?
Yes. .22 LR replicas of the 1911, such as the Mauser 1911-22, sell new for €415 to €470. .22 LR conversion kits also exist for 1911 frames built to US military specifications. In .22 LR, the 1911 runs neither in IPSC nor in TAR pistol, but the ammunition budget falls to €312 a year bought by the case.
