Shadow 2 recoil: a low barrel and 1,330 g of steel
CZ attributes the series' accuracy and comfort to two design choices12. The first is a low-set barrel, in the architecture inherited from the CZ 75: the bore axis comes closer to the hand, which shortens the lever arm of muzzle rise.
The second is the steel frame: 1,330 g with an empty magazine1, a mass that CZ says contributes significantly to shooting comfort2. It is this combination, not the weight alone, that explains how it behaves.
Shadow 2 trigger: 4,691 g, then 1,530 g
The Shadow 2 is an exposed-hammer pistol, in double action then single action. The first shot, hammer down, calls for a long, heavy pull; once the slide has cycled, the hammer stays cocked and the following shots break much more lightly.

CZ lists 46 N in double action, or 4,691 g, against 15 N, or 1,530 g, in single action1. On the Carry version, those figures rise to 53 and 21 N, or 5,404 and 2,141 g3.
Two ways of starting coexist in competition: firing the first shot in double action, or starting hammer cocked, safety on. IPSC Production settles it for the first: hammer-fired pistols start hammer down there, first shot in double action15. Beyond the weight, three parameters decide how the trigger feels, and CZ puts figures on them1:
- The travel, 3 to 4 mm in single action, against 12 mm in double action.
- The break, which CZ describes as crisp and clearly defined.
- The reset, short: 3 to 4 mm, which allows fast doubles.
Safety or decocker: the standard Shadow 2 or the Carry
The standard Shadow 2 has an ambidextrous manual safety2. When on, it blocks the trigger mechanism and the slide4: the pistol can stay hammer cocked, safety on, and break in single action on the first shot, outside the divisions that require double action15.
The Carry version makes the opposite choice: a decocker replaces the safety and lowers the cocked hammer without touching the trigger34. The breaks get heavier, 21 N in single action and 53 N in double3: a compromise paid for on the timer.
Shadow 2 weight: an asset at the range, a load on a stage
- In static precision, the mass absorbs recoil and steadies the sight picture; it costs fatigue after two hundred rounds.
- In timed stages, the gain in stability costs fatigue and inertia in target transitions.
- In transport, 1,330 g is noticeable against the 743 g of a Glock 3416.

Two lessons. The 92X Performance weighs more than the Shadow 2, although it is often thought lighter. And the Staccato P, steel as well, sits 394 grams lower: weight is therefore not a performance criterion in itself, only one means among others of keeping the pistol flat when shooting. The Beretta 92X Performance, its most direct rival, weighs more: 1,350 g with an empty magazine5. The Staccato P sits 394 g lower, with a frame that is nonetheless 4140 steel11. Weight is therefore only one means among others of keeping the pistol flat: through mass at CZ, Beretta and Tanfoglio, through geometry and trigger at Staccato.
Shadow 2 ergonomics: ambidextrous controls
CZ pays attention to handling across the series2. The front and back straps are serrated, the duralumin grips checkered; the manual safety is ambidextrous, and the magazine release can be switched to the left or right. The slide stop, extended on some models, also serves as a thumb rest.
The grip is 34 mm wide, like a Glock 34's16; its shape can only be judged in the hand.
Shadow 2 maintenance: cleaned after every session
Reliability
An Optics Ready example has been the subject of a 50,000-round review12. CZ's manual names one wear part: the recoil spring guide buffer, to be replaced as a precaution after 1,000 to 1,500 rounds4.
Maintenance
The manual calls for cleaning after every use, and at least once a year on a pistol that is not fired4. The barrel is oiled for storage, then wiped with a dry cloth before shooting4. No disassembly beyond field stripping: adjustments and repairs belong at a gunsmith4.

Shadow 2 magazines: 19 + 1 listed by CZ
CZ lists a capacity of 19 + 1: its nickel-plated magazines can take a base pad that adds two rounds, and three are supplied with the full-size version1. The magazines are shared with the SP-01 Shadow, at €65 to €70 each from two gunsmiths2021.
Three consequences at purchase:
- One or two spare magazines belong in the price, a minimum in competition.
- The capacity allowed by the division matters before buying base pads: IPSC Production caps it at 15 rounds at the start15.
- The base pad depends on the event: +2 or +3 rounds, around €25 from two gunsmiths2223.
CZ does not offer a Shadow 2 in .22 LR. For cheaper practice, a Kadet .22 LR conversion kit exists for the Shadow 2: €819 to €845 recorded on 24 September 20262827. The kit's maker recommends high-velocity .22 LR for reliable cycling28. The choice between the two calibers is set out in our comparison 9mm or .22 LR.
Shadow 2, Beretta 92X or Glock 34: what sets them apart
Against the Beretta 92X Performance
Two steel hammer-fired pistols, in double then single action, both named on the IPSC Production list16. What separates them:
- The 92X: a lighter first shot, 3,000 g against 4,691, for 15 rounds and 1,350 g5.
- The Shadow 2: 19 listed rounds, 20 g less, and a single action at 1,530 g against 1,50015.
That leaves the grip, which is judged in the hand.
Against the Glock 34
Here, two strategies rather than two pistols. The Glock 34 weighs 743 g with an empty magazine, 587 less, and its single 24 N break, or 2,447 g, is consistent but heavier than a Shadow 2's single action6. Our article on pistol eligibility by discipline goes through the events one by one.
Upgrading a Shadow 2 within the limits of its division
CZ presents it as competition-ready out of the box1. The usual upgrades, by increasing cost:
- Magazine base pads, around €252223.
- An aluminum magwell, from €73 to €902223.
- Trigger work, entrusted to a gunsmith.
Each part is chosen according to the division. In IPSC Production, only magazines, open sights, grip panels, springs, hammers and trigger assemblies may be replaced; flared magwells, compensators and ports are forbidden there15.
Optics: choosing a Shadow 2 version by division
Mounting a red dot changes the division: the optic is forbidden in Production and required in Production Optics15. The version is therefore chosen after the division, because having a slide machined afterwards costs more and takes the pistol out of service. The factory sights
A 1 mm red fibre-optic front sight and an adjustable rear sight1: the eye goes to the bright dot. That front sight is forbidden at ISSF 25 m and in the French federation's TAR event 830, where CZ Shadows are allowed if they meet the event's criteria1718.
Mounting a red dot
The OR version is prepared at the factory to take a compact optic4, and is on the IPSC Production list16. The red dot is fixed through a plate, on a proprietary four-screw seat1314. Plates cover the main footprints13:
- Trijicon RMR, the most widespread in competition;
- Shield RMSc, on compact optics;
- Docter / Noblex, common in Europe;
- C-More RTS and Vortex Venom.
Plates come in several types depending on the slide generation: that is the classic ordering mistake13. The Carry takes a Shield RMSc-footprint optic directly on the slide, with no plate3.

The first year comes to about €2,740 to €2,910, before license and club fees. In the following years, ammunition remains the main item: after three years, it has cost as much as the pistol.

Buying a Shadow 2: who it suits, and who less
What it brings, and what it asks
It suits a range shooter who wants a stable, accurate pistol without the budget of a 2011, and who is not put off by double action.
It suits less someone who transports their equipment a lot, insists on an identical break from the first shot to the last, or has not yet settled on a discipline.
In that last case, the question is not the model but the event: our criteria for a first sport pistol take the problem in that order, and a .22 LR costs far less to shoot.

Version and division rules are checked before buying. The spec sheets of the standard Shadow 2, the Compact, the Carry, the OR and the Target models differ considerably. Weights, optics and permitted modifications vary from one division to another: when in doubt, your club's range officer decides before the gunsmith does.

Why is the CZ Shadow 2 so stable when shooting?
Two things combine, and CZ itself highlights them. The barrel sits low, on the bore axis inherited from the CZ 75, which shortens the lever arm of muzzle rise. And the frame is steel: 1,330 grams with an empty magazine, a mass that CZ says contributes to shooting comfort.
Is the double-action first shot a flaw?
It is a compromise, whose value depends on the use. The first shot breaks much harder — 46 N listed by CZ, or 4,691 g — than the following ones, at 15 N, or 1,530 g. A shooter coming from a striker-fired pistol has to learn it. In IPSC Production, that double-action first shot is mandatory; in other events, the pistol can start hammer cocked, safety on.
Shadow 2, Compact or Carry: what does the version change?
A lot. The Carry replaces the manual safety with a decocker, moves to an 870-gram aluminum frame, and its breaks are clearly heavier: 21 N in single action and 53 N in double, or 2,141 and 5,404 g, against 15 and 46 N on the standard model. The Compact reduces size and weight. A spec sheet is therefore read with its version.
Does it need modifying?
Not to compete: CZ presents it as competition-ready out of the box. Modifications are then chosen according to the division: in IPSC Production, only magazines, open sights, grip panels, springs, hammers and trigger assemblies may come from elsewhere, and compensators and ports are forbidden.
How does it differ from the Beretta 92X Performance?
Both are steel hammer-fired pistols, in double then single action, and both are on the IPSC Production list. The 92X even weighs a little more: 1,350 g against 1,330. Its first shot is lighter, 3,000 g against 4,691, and its single action comparable, 1,500 g against 1,530. The Shadow 2 carries 19 listed rounds against 15.
Is the Shadow 2 a category B firearm in France?
Yes, in every version: it is a centerfire pistol, so a category B firearm under French law, which a sport shooter can only buy with an authorization from the prefect, a valid shooting license and three supervised shooting sessions at least two months apart.
