The Beretta 92X Performance is a steel-framed 92: 1,350 g with an empty magazine, 405 g more than a 92 FS. Beretta lists 3,000 g for the first shot and 1,500 g after that. It is named on the IPSC Production list and comes in an Optic Ready version.

Beretta's manual lists 1,350 g with an empty magazine for the Production and Production Optic versions, and 1,210 g for the Defensive version, with the same barrel1. Frame and slide are steel; the slide has been widened near the rails, extra mass that Beretta presents as a gain in stability when shooting1.
That is 405 g more than an alloy-framed 92 FS, about 945 g for the same 125 mm barrel3, and 20 g more than a CZ Shadow 2, 1,330 g4. In precision shooting, that mass slows muzzle rise; through a stage or in transport, it has to be carried.

The 92X Performance is an exposed-hammer pistol, in double then single action. Beretta lists 3,000 g in double action and 1,500 g in single action, with a 2 to 4 mm reset adjustable by a screw12.
Hammer cocked, it breaks like a CZ Shadow 2, listed at 15 N, about 1,530 g4. The difference comes on the first shot, hammer down: 3,000 g against 4,691 g, or 1,691 g less. That is the shot that most unsettles a shooter coming from a striker-fired pistol, as our guide double action, single action or striker-fired explains.
Both breaks stay above the minimums: 2,270 g on the first shot in IPSC Production, 1,000 g at ISSF 25 m710. Any trigger work belongs at a gunsmith, as our trigger guide explains.
92X Performance safety: on the frame, no decocker
On the 92X Performance, the ambidextrous safety is mounted on the frame: it locks the sear and the slide, hammer down or cocked1. It does not act as a decocker. To lower the hammer on a chambered round, the manual describes a manual procedure: holding the hammer with the thumb, pressing the trigger, letting it down1.
Two consequences in competition:
- In Production, the hammer must be fully down at the start signal and the first shot fired in double action7. The procedure is therefore repeated before every stage.
- Hammer cocked, safety on, the pistol breaks in single action on the first shot, a configuration allowed outside Production and Production Optics17.
92X Performance in IPSC: Production and Production Optics
IPSC shooting, called TSV in France, follows the IPSC rulebook9. The IPSC Production list, updated on 9 March 2026, names the "92X Performance"8, and Beretta's manual presents the Production and Production Optic versions as qualified for IPSC1.

In Standard, the 41 mm wide version fits in the 225 × 150 × 45 mm box; the one listed at 48 mm outside the United States exceeds it17. The divisions are covered in detail in our article on IPSC in France.
92X Performance in TAR and at 25 m: the fibre must go
In ISSF 25 m centerfire pistol, the 92X Performance meets the specification table110:
- Weight: 1,350 g with an empty magazine, for 1,400 g at most.
- Dimensions: 222 × 148 × 48 mm at most, for a 300 × 150 × 50 mm box.
- Barrel and sights: 125 and 170 mm, for 153 and 220 mm at most.
- Trigger: 1,500 g hammer cocked, for 1,000 g at least.
Its fibre-optic front sight, on the other hand, is forbidden there, as it is in TAR event 8301011. It is dovetailed and can be replaced by a plain blade1.
In TAR, the French federation's service-pistol discipline, the 125 mm barrel stays under the 13 cm limit; the factory rubber wrap-around grip is for the range officer to judge, the rules excluding grips made of soft material111. Optics: the 92X Performance Optic Ready or a plate
Beretta offers a 92X Performance Optic Ready, sold for €1,949 to €1,9701315, €50 to €100 more than the version with a rear sight. Its manual describes a Production Optic version qualified for IPSC1.
On the version with a rear sight, a dovetail plate replaces the rear sight and takes the optic, with no machining: €80 at two gunsmiths1315. Production Optics accepts either, provided the optic is fixed on the upper rear of the slide7. Footprints are covered in our red dot guide.
92X Performance, CZ Shadow 2, 92 FS: what sets them apart
- Against a CZ Shadow 2: same family, same weight within 20 g. The 92X Performance breaks 1,691 g lighter on the first shot; the Shadow 2 lists 19 + 1 rounds against 1514.
- Against a 92 FS: 405 g of extra steel and a safety moved to the frame. The 92 FS sells for €1,049 to €1,205, about €700 to €850 less31314.
- Against a Glock 34: a single 2,447 g break, 607 g less to carry, but no access to Production68.
Beretta 92 in .22 LR: the 92 FS-22 and a kit
The family exists in .22 LR in two forms. The 92 FS-22 is a .22 LR replica, 15 rounds, sold new for €629 to €6421214. A .22 LR conversion kit, a barrel and a 10-round magazine, exists for the 92 FS; in France it is sold on presentation of the category B authorization14. No kit is announced for the 92X Performance.
Under French law, a .22 LR pistol is still a category B firearm19; the choice between the two calibers is set out in our comparison 9mm or .22 LR.

With the rear-sight version, the first year comes to about €2,610 to €2,810, before license and club fees; in the following years, ammunition remains the main item, €624 a year at €0.26 a round16. A 92 FS-22 brings that item down to €312 a year by the case of 500.
On top come spare magazines, and a plain front blade for 25 m or TAR.
In France, the 92X Performance is a Category B firearm, like every centerfire pistol: buying one requires a prefectural authorization, and storing it a gun safe, a strong cabinet or a strongroom1920. The license, the club and the Category B authorization are costed in our first-year budget.
Buying a 92X Performance: who it suits, and who less
What it brings, by objective
For IPSC in Production, it brings a pistol named on the list, heavy and with a moderate first shot. In return, the hammer is lowered by hand before every stage, for lack of a decocker.
For Production Optics, the Optic Ready version or an €80 plate open the division with no machining. In return, the factory version costs €50 to €100 more.
For 25 m centerfire, it meets the weight, dimension and trigger rules. In return, its fibre-optic front sight has to be replaced, and its 1,350 g come close to the 1,400 g ceiling.

Three misconceptions about the Beretta 92X Performance
- "There is no optic-ready version." Beretta sells a 92X Performance Optic Ready, and its manual describes a Production Optic version qualified for IPSC113.
- "Its safety doubles as a decocker." On the Performance, the safety is on the frame and locks the sear and the slide; the hammer is lowered by hand1.
- "Its factory sights are legal everywhere." Its fibre-optic front sight is forbidden at ISSF 25 m and in TAR event 8301011.

Version and market change the spec sheet. The 92X Performance Production, Optic Ready, Defensive and the American versions share neither the same weight, nor the same slide, nor always the same width. Do you need an authorization to buy a Beretta 92X Performance in France?
Yes. Like every centerfire pistol, the 92X Performance is a category B firearm under French law: a sport shooter can only buy one with an authorization from the prefect, applied for online after three supervised shooting sessions. Four to seven months usually pass between the license and the purchase, and the pistol must then be stored in a gun safe, a strong cabinet or a strongroom.
