Red dots on competition pistols: how to choose one

Red dots have taken over competition pistol shooting, but the real cost runs past the price of the optic and mounting depends on a compatibility few people check before buying. Here is what one changes, what it costs, and how to choose in the right order.

What a red dot actually changes
The argument comes down to one thing: focal plane.
With iron sights the eye has to negotiate three planes — front sight, rear notch, target — and can hold only one of them sharp. A red dot removes two. You look at the target, the dot lands on it, and focus never shifts.
On what that delivers in practice, one reviewer is more measured than the usual marketing: he grants a genuine accuracy advantage past roughly fifteen yards, while observing that at closer range the gap against well-drilled iron sights narrows considerably.
Put differently, the gain depends on your stage. On distant targets and deliberate shots it is real. On fast close-range arrays it owes more to the shooter's practice than to the equipment.
The real cost: three line items, not one
This is the most common budgeting mistake on the subject. The optic's price is only part of the spend.

One reviewer underlines the weight of the second item, citing mounts reaching 150 dollars on top of an already expensive optic11. Manufacturers confirm the plate is a separate purchase: Walther states "Optic Plate Included: No" on its own sheets4. Smith & Wesson is the exception in this series and ships seven mounting plates with its Optics Ready Full Size7. The third line item adds cost and takes the pistol out of service for weeks.
Hence the rule that follows from everything else: if a red dot is part of your plan, make compatibility a criterion when choosing the pistol, not a problem to solve later.

Footprints, and the order in which to choose
An optic does not screw straight onto a slide. It has a footprint — the arrangement of its screws and lugs — and needs a matching plate.
These are the footprints that appear most often in the reviews we worked through, in order of frequency:

One reviewer notes that a pistol sold optics-ready generally arrives with an RMR-pattern plate, or has one available11. That is what makes the format the default when you are undecided. Aimpoint takes the opposite route on the ACRO, building the interface into the sight body and publishing a plate for each host pistol — Glock MOS, CZ Shadow 2 OR, S&W M&P9, Walther Q5 Match, Sig P320 and others, plus a plate that converts an RMR interface1.
The method that avoids unpleasant surprises runs against the intuitive order: look first at which plates exist for your pistol and your slide generation, then choose an optic among the available footprints. The reverse regularly leads to hunting for a plate that was never made.
Battery life and failure, the part nobody advertises
This is where the reviews are at their most candid, and it deserves reporting as it stands.
On the favorable side, some optics are credited with over a year of battery life before a change, and one reviewer explicitly uses that endurance as a ranking criterion11. Where a maker publishes the figure it is stated precisely rather than loosely: Aimpoint gives the ACRO P-2 "50,000 hours (over 5 years) of operation on one battery" at daylight setting 6 of 10, on a CR2032, with four night-vision settings alongside six daylight ones1.
On the unfavorable side, the same reviewer is direct. He finds that advertised battery life is not always what you get. And he reports something worse: three successive examples of one model with battery contact problems, the dot cutting in and out during live fire. Those incidents alone pushed that model down his personal ranking.
His conclusion is worth carrying over in spirit: he would rather have iron sights than an optic that works half the time. On equipment your aim depends on, reliability comes before features.

Should you keep iron sights
The majority answer is yes, and it follows directly from the point above.
Suppressor-height sights remain visible inside the red dot window: they do not interfere with normal aiming and take over immediately if a battery dies, a lens fogs or the optic takes a knock11. Several pistols ship in exactly that configuration, and Staccato notes that co-witness sights are required by major law enforcement agencies wherever red dots are authorized8.
On a competition gun it is cheap insurance. Just confirm your division permits the arrangement. USPSA imposes no constraint on retaining irons alongside a required optic in Carry Optics, but it is the Range Master who classifies any sight in dispute5.
A red dot moves you to another division
This is the consequence most often discovered too late.
Mounting an optic takes a pistol out of the iron-sight divisions and into the ones that allow optics. Both rulebooks are public, and both are precise about it.
USPSA distinguishes "open sights", which "do not use electronic circuitry and/or lenses", from "optical/electronic sights", which do. Production allows "notch and post type only". Carry Optics and Limited Optics require an optical sight, and require it "attached directly to slide between rear of slide and ejection port" — it "may not be mounted to the frame in any way". Carry Optics adds a ceiling of 59 ounces with the optic and an empty magazine fitted, and caps magazines at 141.25 mm5.
IPSC runs the same split across two divisions built on the same base: Production forbids optical sights, Production Optics requires one, on otherwise identical trigger and first-shot conditions6.
Rules change between rulebook editions, and each page of both documents names its own. One clause is worth remembering when a fitting is borderline: USPSA makes the Range Master "the final authority in respect of the classification of any sights used in an USPSA match"5. Check the rulebook before buying the optic, not after fitting it.

Which pistols take an optic without milling

On unprepared pistols, milling at a specialist is the normal route and is widely practiced. One technical detail is worth knowing: on some slides, the material removed by the cut roughly matches the mass the optic adds, which preserves slide balance and how the gun behaves under recoil11. The order of magnitude is small either way — Aimpoint puts the ACRO P-2 at 61 grams1.

Is a red dot worth it for you
It earns its place if your stages include targets past fifteen yards or so, if your division allows it, and if the budget covers all three line items rather than just the optic.
It earns it less if you are starting out. Iron sights impose an aiming discipline that builds the fundamentals, and money not spent on glass goes into ammunition — which does more for scores than equipment. Your division rulebook outranks every technical consideration. The division rules quoted here are read from the USPSA Competition Rules of March 2026 and the IPSC Handgun Competition Rules of January 2026, both cited below; each names its edition on every page, and a newer one may be in force by the time you read this. Confirm with your match director before committing the spend. Footprints and plates also vary between slide generations of the same model: have your gunsmith confirm compatibility before ordering, since plates are rarely returnable.
