Reloading log: recording your loads so they teach you something

Verified by a gunsmithA reloader who records nothing repeats their tests. A reloader who records everything except the result piles up rows without ever learning anything. Here are the eleven columns that make a load record usable, and a printable template that carries them.

Two families of columns, and the one missing everywhere
A row in a reloading log carries two things of different natures: what you assembled, and what it did.

Up to here, most templates in circulation keep up. It is afterwards that they stop.

A load without its result teaches nothing. It is a list of recipes, not a log. The document's value comes from the correlation between what you assembled and what you got, string after string — and that is precisely what the free templates online leave out.
The lot number, the column everyone skips
It is the easiest to neglect and the one that costs most.
A group that degrades when nothing else changed becomes simply incomprehensible if the powder lot was not written down. Two lots of the same powder do not necessarily behave identically, and the difference only shows if you can attribute it.
The number is on the container. Reading it off takes two seconds as you open the tub, and it becomes unfindable a few months later, when the question comes up. It is the same reasoning that leads to numbering magazines to attribute a malfunction: a variable you did not record is a variable you will never be able to blame.
Change only one thing at a time
A well-kept log does not make up for a vague protocol.
If you change the charge, the bullet and the overall length between two strings, the log will faithfully record that something moved — with nothing to say what. The rule is the one for any comparative test: one variable at a time, over strings of the same length, in similar conditions.
Two precautions are worth adding, because they come up often:
- The distance goes on every row. An inch and a half at 25 yards and an inch and a half at 50 yards do not describe the same performance. A group without its distance is unusable, including by you in six months.
- The rounds per string stay constant. A three-round group and a ten-round group are not comparable, the shorter one mechanically flattering the result.
Our reloading log template
We looked for a printable template carrying the eleven columns, group included. We did not find one1: the documents in circulation are either component tables with no result, or sheets sold commercially, or forms designed for another purpose.

Landscape is not a whim: eleven columns in portrait become too narrow to fill in by hand. The sheet carries the header, an identification block — firearm, press, measure, last scale calibration — and ten load rows1. One per load-development session; anyone wanting more reprints it.
This template contains no load data, and that is deliberate. A printable that suggested a charge would become a source of reloading data, which it is not and must not become. Charges, charge ranges and overall lengths come exclusively from the tables published by the maker of the powder you are using, for the exact case, primer and bullet combination in hand. A load written in a log — yours or anyone else's — holds only for the firearm, the lot and the components it was recorded with.
What this log is not
Two confusions are worth clearing up, because they concern neighboring documents.
It is not a shooting log. A shooting log records sessions — date, range, discipline, firearm — and answers to tracking your practice over time. This one records loads. The two are kept in parallel and do not replace each other; part of why we built one.
It is not a source of loads. Repeated here because it is the point that counts: the log records, it does not prescribe.
From paper to continuous tracking
The workshop vocabulary here is what comes through in the video sources, where technique and charge weighing take up most of the talk2. Paper has a real advantage: it fills in at the bench, with dirty hands, without a screen. It has an equally real limit: it calculates nothing and does not sort.
As soon as you try to compare twelve strings, isolate the effect of one lot, or follow a group's evolution over time, sorting becomes the main operation — and that is exactly what a digital record does without effort. The two complement each other more than they compete: written at the bench, worked afterwards.

Shoot the same number of rounds per string, in similar conditions, and change only one thing at a time — the charge, or the bullet, or the overall length, never all three together.
How many rounds should a test string be?
Whatever you choose, provided it stays constant across the strings you intend to compare. A three-round group and a ten-round group are not comparable: the shorter one mechanically flatters the result, because it gives the fliers fewer chances to appear. Fixing the string length is what turns a row of numbers into a series you can actually read.
