Renewing your FFTir license: dates, EDEN and pitfalls

It is not the shooter who renews their FFTir license but their club, in the federal intranet ITAC. For the 2026-2027 season, renewals open on 24 August, the license appears on EDEN from 1 September, and the old one stays valid until 30 September at the latest.

Renewing your FFTir license: the club does it in ITAC

Renewal is an act of the club: it is done in ITAC, the association management intranet1. EDEN, the license holder's personal space, only displays the license, « une fois validée et payée par l'association » [once validated and paid for by the association]4. No payment goes through EDEN.

The shooter has three things to do:

  1. Hand a medical certificate less than a year old to the club, or upload it to EDEN, unless a valid one is already on file16.
  2. Pay the subscription to the club.
  3. Collect the paperless license on EDEN, and keep a copy offline.

Each season is a new act: the previous season's license cannot be taken as proof that the new season's license has been issued12.

2026-2027 renewal: from 24 August to 30 September

The license runs from 1 September to 31 August3. For 2026-2027, the federal calendar is as follows12:

  • 16 August 2026: technical closing of the 2025-2026 season in ITAC.
  • 24 August 2026: new licenses and renewals open, for clubs.
  • 1 September 2026: 2026-2027 licenses available on EDEN.
  • 30 September 2026: last day of validity of an old license that has not been renewed.

Between 1 and 30 September, the two seasons overlap: the old license stays displayed on EDEN and its QR code stays valid « jusqu'à la première occurrence du renouvellement de la licence ou au plus tard jusqu'au 30 septembre 2026 » [until the license is renewed, or until 30 September 2026 at the latest]1. That window gives the club time to validate and pay. From 1 October 2026, the 2025-2026 license is no longer valid in any case2.

Insurance follows the same offset: a 2026-2027 license is insured until 30 September 20271.

License missing from EDEN: club, payment or certificate

The license appears on EDEN only once the club has validated and paid for it in ITAC4. The ordinary causes of a missing license are:

  • The club has not yet validated the renewal, the most frequent cause in the first days of the campaign.
  • The subscription has not been paid: « Il faut que vous ayez réglé la cotisation » [you must have paid the subscription]5.
  • The medical certificate is missing or has expired in EDEN5.
  • The shooter is changing club: it is the new club that enters the license.

Licenses are often entered in batches, by volunteers5: a few days between payment and display is nothing unusual.

Medical certificate at renewal: under a year old

The certificate must be less than a year old at renewal, as for a new license1. Shooting is one of the disciplines for which the code du sport requires this certificate every time a license is issued or renewed17: no health questionnaire replaces it, at any age.

It is valid for one year from its date, not for a season6. If it expires after renewal, the license stays valid to the end of the season; an up-to-date certificate is still required to compete, and the federation sends « une alerte par mail 2 mois avant l'échéance » [an e-mail alert two months before expiry]6. The statements it should carry are set out in the FFTir medical certificate.

License not renewed: B authorization void within 3 months

For a holder of a Category B firearm, not renewing has a direct consequence: « l'autorisation est nulle de plein droit à l'expiration d'un délai de trois mois suivant la date de fin de validité de la licence » [the authorization is void by operation of law three months after the license's end of validity]10. As the license ends on 31 August3, the authorization lapses around 1 December; that is the date the UFA gives for the 2026-2027 season2.

Disposal takes place within the three months that follow either the expiry of the authorization or the date it became void11. The license and the authorization run on two separate clocks: the authorization lasts five years, and its own renewal must be applied for at least three months before it ends9. Renew without shooting or let it lapse: pros and cons

A season without shooting raises the question of renewal. The two options do not have the same effects for someone who holds a Category B firearm.

Renewing the license despite a quiet season

Pros

  • The Category B authorization is kept: it lapses only with the license10.
  • Coming back is immediate: license, insurance and range access stay in place.

Cons

  • A full subscription: €165 to €270 at the club1314, plus about €30 for the certificate15.
  • Regular practice is still required to renew the authorization when it ends7: a paid license does not replace sessions.

Letting the license lapse

Pros

  • No subscription and no certificate for the season.
  • No effect on recreational shooting for someone without a Category B firearm: a license can be taken up again at any time in a club.

Cons

  • The Category B authorization lapses three months after 31 August, and the firearms must then be disposed of within three months1011.
  • Buying a firearm again starts from scratch: three controlled sessions at least two months apart, so four months at the very least, then the prefecture's review79.
  • Twelve consecutive months without shooting bar the federation's favorable opinion16.

What each choice brings

To keep Category B firearms, renewal is the only route: it costs one subscription, whereas not renewing means losing the authorization and disposing of the firearms.

For a shooter without a Category B firearm, skipping a season costs nothing beyond the break in shooting. In return, any future authorization application means rebuilding the three controlled sessions.

Changing club at renewal: the transfer

A transfer is possible at any point in the season12. The shooter sends their resignation to the club being left by certified mail, and the new club enters the transfer in ITAC. It takes effect once the former club has passed on the shooter's file, or failing that fifteen days after the letter was sent18.

Four misconceptions about renewing the license

  • "On 1 September without a new license, I am breaking the law." No: the old license stays valid until renewal, and until 30 September at the latest1.
  • "A certificate that expires mid-season cancels the license." No: the renewed license stays valid until 31 August6. It does, however, close access to competitions.
  • "The shooting logbook proves my practice." Not since 1 July 2020: the article that created it has been repealed8, and it is the club register and the federation's opinion that count16. See the three controlled sessions rule.
  • "Skipping a season does not affect my firearms." It does: the Category B authorization becomes void three months after the license ends10.

In my first year, I spent the last week of August convinced I would be breaking the law on 1 September. Who renews my FFTir license, me or my club?

The club. It renews the license in ITAC, the federal intranet for associations. The shooter supplies a medical certificate less than a year old and pays their subscription; they then collect their paperless license on EDEN, once the club has validated and paid for it.

From when can the 2026-2027 license be renewed?
